(Contemporary Realities and Systemic Struggles: Intersecting Perspectives on Racism and the Experiences of Black Communities in Quebec)

This session delves into systemic racism impacting Black communities in Quebec, examining both contemporary and historical perspectives. Topics to be discussed include institutional racism in Quebec today, and historical roots of systemic racism/segregation meanwhile showcasing the resilience of Afro-Quebecers/Canadians.

Led by Ricardo Lamour and Aly Ndiaye

  •  Alumnus of the UN Human Rights fellowship programs, Ricardo Lamour is a Human Rights Advocate of Haitian origin. He also initiated the joint report Anti-Black Racism, for Canada’s Fourth Universal Periodic Review. Through his work, Ricardo documents the fractures in support for marginalized communities, particularly Black and Indigenous groups.
  • Aly Ndiaye, aka Webster, is a veteran of the Quebec hiphop scene. He now travels the world with his concerts, writing workshops, and lectures. Passionate about history, the rapper from Limoilou is particularly interested in slavery and the Afro-descendant presence in Quebec and Canada since the era of New France.
